In this article, we’ll teach you how to check if your products need safety testing, what to test and how.
Understanding Product Safety
In order to do that, we recommend you go to the Consumer Product Safety Commission website (hereafter referred to as the CPSC) which can be found from the following link:
There is a ton of information on this site, which may be overwhelming at first, but the good news is, their customer service is brilliant, so if you call or email them, they are super helpful.
What You Need To Be Aware Of With Product Safety
Bear in mind, some products will require certain safety requirements in order for them to be sold safely.
Every product that is going to go on the body or in the body, for example, skin care and supplements for example.
These kind or products need a different level of safety which we are not covering in this article. However, if you are dealing in supplements or skin care, then you need to deal with the FDA in the United States (US Food and Drug Administration).
What Products Need Testing?
You can get some idea of the products which need testing by visiting the Consumer Product Safety Commission, for example; shoes, smoke alarms, ceiling fixtures, lighting, washing machines, dishwashers.
You can see some of the categories below under ‘Safety Education Centers’:
Bear in mind if you’re doing anything with babies, then safety goes up a lot so bear that in mind if you are selling anything to do with babies, or are thinking of launching in that category.
It’s actually not that hard to comply, there are some things around labeling that you have to comply with, you have to have certain things on your label. Again CPSC can help you with that, and then you have to have your product tested for certain things.
The easiest way to comply with the regulations is to become a Small Batch Manufacturer.
How To Become A Small Batch Manufacturer
The good news is, you don’t have to test every single batch that you send, you can apply to the CPSC to become a Small Batch Manufacturer.
You can learn about small batch manufacturing from the link below:
You can apply to become a Small Batch Manufacturer which means once every year, you test one batch of your product and it only costs a couple of hundred dollars to do this, so it’s relatively inexpensive.
You can register with the CPSC as a Small Batch Manufacturer from the following link:
Not Every Product Needs Testing
Bear in mind, not every product needs testing, so you may not need to do this at all, it totally depends on your product.
Once you find out if your product needs testing, if you go to the lab testing section of the CPSC from the link below, they’ll give you a whole list of labs around the world:
All these labs are accredited, so wherever you are in the world or wherever your product is manufactured, you can find a lab to test your product.
Once your product has been tested, you can get your supplier to stamp what batch it is, so this is easily traceable in the future.
Products To Stay Away From
There are certain products to stay away from, for example, bicycle helmets, infant bath seats, things like this are high risk so stay away from them and save yourself the hassle.
If you’re unsure of anything, reach out to the CPSC, as we discussed earlier, they are super helpful and it is their job to help you.
As we mentioned earlier, if you’re doing anything with babies, then safety goes up a lot so bear that in mind if you are selling anything to do with babies, or are thinking of launching in that category.
